Ted Turner - Bio

tedbionewoneDAVID ALAN TURNER was born in Sheldon, England on August 2nd 1950.
He started playing the Guitar at the age of 16, eighteen months later he was playing in a band called KING BISCUIT (Local boys from the neighborhood playing the blues.)

1968    Ted’s first audition was for JON HISEMAN. Jon (drums) had recently played for
JOHN MAYALL BLUESBREAKERS band, with DICK HECKSALL SMITH        (tenor sax), Dick would play two saxophones at the same time in harmony.  TONY REEVES (bass).  They then left to form COLOSSEUM, which was a progressive jazz rock band.

1969    Summer:  TED answered an ad in MELODY MAKER (one of only two U.K. music magazines at that time) and auditioned for a new, as yet un-named band. Another young guitarist named ANDY POWELL answered the same ad. The organizers of the band MARTIN TURNER (Bass), STEVE UPTON (Drums) could not choose between the two, and decided to keep them both. (Interesting thought process they were looking for a keyboard player and one guitar player…the norm) Their twin lead guitar attack became the trademark of the band, which was ultimately known as WISHBONE ASH.

WISHBONE ASH is considered to be the major innovators of the harmony twin lead guitar format. There pioneering and original sounds have influenced many to follow, such as the EAGLES (Hotel California) STEELY DAN (reeling in the years) IRON MAIDEN, THIN LIZZIE (the boys are back in town) LYNARD SKYNARD (Free bird) and others.

The Guitar interplay between TED and ANDY is legendary. A band respected and admired by musicians and fans alike for their distinctive and innovative music.
These attributes have resulted in TED and ANDY being voted “two of the ten most important guitarists in ROCK HISTORY” (Quoted in Traffic Magazine 1989)

Quoted in Rolling Stones “Top 20 guitarists of all time…..”

“TED TURNER and ANDY POWELL are probably the most interesting two-guitar team since the days when BECK and PAGE graced the YARDBIRDS.” (Quoted by Melody Maker-June 1972).

The fifth member of the the band and manager was MILES COPELAND.  His guidance and energy were important to the success of the band.  MILES was the eldest brother of three, IAN and STEWART.  STEWART COPELAND later became the drummer and founder of THE POLICE.

WISHBONE would rehearse in the basement of the Copeland residence in London for weeks at a time, developing their musical style with support from the whole family.
MILES used the success of WISHBONE, to develop his empire, notably I.R.S. records, managing the POLICE, and STING.

ARGUS is the essential wishbone album, found in most music fans collection.
It has become one of the all time classic rock albums.   It is considered a landmark album in the progression of their twin-lead harmony interplay.

“Enter ARGUS in 1972, and the musical world is given possibly one of the most unappreciated records EVER produced of any genre. This album should be up there with the likes of THRILLER, LED ZEPPELIN IV, OK COMPUTER and DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, as one of the top albums of all time, or at least one of the greatest classic rock records ever produced. This is truly a gem. The line-up in 1972 strikes every nail square on the head with this masterpiece” (BT Scene)

Argus reaches “NUMBER ONE ALBUM” in Switzerland.

The album is named one of the “TOP TEN MOST POPULAR ALBUMS IN HISTORY” in Greece.
